Which of these can I access?

It is the responsibility of the individual (or parent where appropriate) to seek rebates or funding to help cover the cost of psychology sessions. Please seek current information from the agencies directly.

 

The following information may be helpful as a summary:​

​Better Access to Mental Health plan:

​

  • Rebates which are provided by Medicare.

  • Commonly known as a 'Mental health care plan.'

  • Accessible by children and adults of all ages.

  • The plan is provided by your GP, Paediatrician or Psychiatrist.

  • Allows up to 10 rebates per calendar year, for therapy sessions focused on mental health concerns.

    • The current rebate per session when seeing a Clinical Psychologist is $​141.85 (as at July 2024)

    • Reception can submit each claim for you on your behalf.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS):​
 

  • A plan is developed with NDIA which can include psychology therapy sessions, in which case the entire session fee is covered (i.e. no gap fee) for the number of sessions agreed to in your plan.
     

  • Check if you may be eligible: ndis access checklist ​
     

    • NDIS states that they can support individuals who:
      "Have a permanent disability that:

      • reduces your ability to participate effectively in activities, or perform tasks or actions, unless you have support, and

      • affects your capacity for social and economic participation, and

      • means you are likely to require support under the NDIS for a lifetime."

Helping Children with Autism (HCWA) Access to Diagnosis & Treatment rebates

​

  • Rebates for up to four sessions with a psychologist for assessment of a possible Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
     

  • For individuals aged up to 25 years old.
     

  • The child's Paediatrician must provide the appropriate referral to activate access to these rebates.
     

  • Rebates for 20 sessions of treatment are also available. (These are lifetime sessions i.e. they are not reinstated each year).

  • The current rebate per single session is $96.65 (as at July 2024)

​​Private Health Insurance

​

Please speak with your health insurance provider directly to find out what they will cover and the process for making such claims. This differs significantly between providers and policies.
